GUIDE is a partner organization in the Gwinnett Coalition for Health and Human Services'
Drug-Free Communities (DFC) Task Force, a community anti-drug coalition
focusing on the reduction of substance use among youth. In 2007, the
Coalition became a Drug-Free Communities Coalition Grantee, receiving a
5-year, $500,000 grant. For more information about Drug-Free
Communities grantees, please visit the DFC website.
As an
initiative of GUIDE, Inc., the Georgia Teen Institute runs several
programs for the education and enrichment of the lives of teen and
youth in Georgia.
The
Georgia Teen Institutes are leadership and substance abuse prevention
programs for middle and high school youth across the state. Our
programs include a summer conference for middle and high school youth
action teams and a variety of youth leadership conferences and events.
For more information about Georgia Teen Institute, please see our website at www.georgiati.org.
Family Matters is a prevention program aimed at helping families
prevent underage alcohol use and tobacco use. The program, available in
both English and Spanish, is made up of four informational booklets
mailed to parents at home. Each booklet has information about drugs and
alcohol and includes fun activities to do with your teen. After
receiving each booklet, participant families are contacted by a health
educator to go over the booklets and to answer any questions they may
have. The program typically takes fifteen weeks to complete.
Youth Leadership and
Action is a youth empowerment and substance abuse prevention initiative
that trains, supports and encourages Youth Action Teams to become
active change agents in their communities. Youth Action Teams are
formal groups of youth with at least one adult advisor that plan and
implement peer-focused prevention and community service projects that
positively impact their peers and/or their communities. Youth Action
Teams can be established in or affiliated with schools, community
organizations, faith communities, businesses, agencies, civic groups,
neighborhoods or anywhere that youth naturally congregate or are
invited to participate.
The Youth Leadership Conference (YLC) is a day long program for
middle and high school students and adults that provides a collection
of tools for being an effective leader or member of a youth
organization.
The full day event includes high-energy, interactive and engaging
keynote presentations and workshops from locally and nationally
recognized speakers, team building sessions, opportunities for
networking with other youth and adult leaders and an interactive
exhibit hall including community organizations and businesses.
SaveBrains.org is a media campaign designed to educate youth and
parents about alcohol's effects on the developing adolescent brain.
Recent research shows a link between youth alcohol use and lowered
brain capacity.
